As the warm breeze of early summer arrives, we are celebrating one of China’s most cherished traditional holidays—the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival). Falling on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, this festival is a beautiful blend of ancient history, vibrant culture, and family togetherness.
The origins of this festival are deeply rooted in history and health. One of the most famous legends tells the story of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet from ancient China. To express his deep love for his country, he sacrificed his life by leaping into the Miluo River. To protect him, local people raced out in boats and threw rice dumplings into the water to keep the fish away. This touching story is why we now enjoy thrilling dragon boat races and eat Zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves).
Additionally, in ancient times, this festival also served as a traditional “Public Health Day.” People would hang aromatic mugwort and calamus on their doors and wear herbal sachets to ward off summer diseases and pray for good health.
